How to Choose a Cot or Cotbed: A Practical Guide for UK Parents

The cot is the largest purchase in most nurseries, and the one you'll use most. Here's what matters before you pay.

Cot or cotbed?
A standard cot suits babies up to roughly 18 months to 2 years. A cotbed has removable sides and converts to a toddler bed, so it can last until around age 5 to 7. Buy a cot if space is tight or you want a smaller footprint early on. Buy a cotbed if you'd rather buy once. It's the better value for most families.

Safety standards
Look for compliance with the UK/EN standard for cots (BS EN 716). Slat gaps should be narrow enough that a baby's head can't become trapped.

The mattress matters as much as the cot

  • It should be firm and flat.
  • It should fit snugly, with no gaps you could slide more than a couple of fingers into.
  • It should be clean and in good condition. If you use a second-hand one, check it carefully.

Safe sleep basics
These follow NHS and Lullaby Trust guidance:

  • Place baby on their back, feet near the foot of the cot.
  • Keep the cot free of pillows, bumpers, toys and loose blankets.
  • Room-share for the first six months.
  • Position the cot away from radiators, windows and blind cords.

Materials and finish
Solid wood (beech, birch, oak, ash) lasts longer than veneered board and can be refinished. Check that paints and lacquers are child-safe and low in VOCs, which helps air quality in a small room.

Height settings
Look for at least two to three mattress heights: high for newborns, lower once baby can sit and pull up. This is the single most overlooked feature.

Planning the room around it
Leave space for a nursing chair and a changing unit. If you want furniture that coordinates and grows with your child, our design service can plan the layout for you.

Our designers' top tips

  • Measure the doorway and stairs before ordering. Large boxes are hard to carry.
  • Order at least 4 to 6 weeks before the due date.
  • Choose a neutral cot and bring in colour through bedding and wall décor.

FAQs
When should I move my baby from cot to bed? There's no fixed age. Most families move between 18 months and 3.5 years, ideally when the child climbs out or shows readiness, not during other big changes.
Is a cotbed worth the extra cost? Usually, yes, if you plan to use it as a toddler bed.
